Lawmakers in Benin on Saturday approved a constitutional amendment that extends the presidential term from five to seven years and establishes an upper house of parliament.
The two-term limit for presidents remains unchanged. Current President Patrice Talon is set to leave office next April after completing ten years in power.
His endorsed candidate, Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni, is widely seen as the frontrunner in the upcoming presidential election.
The amendment passed with overwhelming support in the National Assembly, securing 90 votes in favour and 19 against. The new senate will consist of at least 25 members, including appointees by the president and ex-officio members such as former heads of state.
