President Bola Tinubu will today embark on a two-nation visit to South Africa and Angola, stopping first in Johannesburg before heading to Luanda
According to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu’s visit begins in Johannesburg, where he will attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit. Following the summit, he will proceed to Angola to participate in the AU–EU Summit.
The G20 summit is scheduled to hold at the Johannesburg Expo Centre from Saturday, November 22, to Sunday, November 23, while the AU–EU summit in Luanda will take place from November 24 to 25.
Invited by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who chairs this year’s G20, Tinubu will join global leaders under the theme, “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” marking the first G20 hosted on African soil. Discussions at the summit will focus on inclusive and sustainable growth, debt and development finance, disaster-risk reduction, climate action, just energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work, and artificial intelligence.
The Presidency noted that Tinubu will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G20 to advance the Renewed Hope Agenda and address issues of regional peace, security, and development. The African Union, now a full G20 member alongside the EU, is expected to participate in the Johannesburg summit.
After Johannesburg, Tinubu will attend the AU–EU summit in Luanda, which will bring together heads of state, innovators, and civil society to discuss climate action, inclusive development, infrastructure, the digital economy, the creative sector, manufacturing, and agribusiness.
He will be accompanied by senior officials, including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance and the Economy, Solid Minerals, Trade and Investment, as well as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.
Onanuga confirmed that the President is expected back in Nigeria at the conclusion of both meetings. While this marks Tinubu’s third visit to South Africa since assuming office, it is his first official trip to Angola as Nigeria’s Head of State.
