Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has resigned

Badaru steps down from his position at a time the country is preparing for major security reforms.

According to the letter he sent to President Bola Tinubu, Monday, December 1, the minister explained that he was leaving office due to health concerns. Tinubu accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Abubakar’s contribution to national security.

The presidency is expected to forward a new ministerial nominee to the Senate later in the week as the administration accelerates its security agenda following the recently declared national security emergency.

Badaru, 63, served two terms as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before joining Tinubu’s cabinet on August 21, 2023.
