Foreign support fueling terrorism in Nigeria - Sheikh Gumi

Renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has alleged that foreign powers are backing terrorist groups operating in Nigeria

Speaking in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Sheikh Gumi claimed that recent attack patterns across the country point to external support for armed groups. He noted that the current situation contradicts earlier improvements in national security.

Gumi highlighted the Abuja–Kaduna highway, previously notorious for deadly attacks on commuters, which had become significantly safer in recent months before the recent surge in violence. He also pointed to farmers in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State, who had returned to their farmlands after abandoning them due to persistent threats—an early sign that security had been stabilizing.

The Islamic cleric said the sudden reversal in progress raises serious concerns. He called on the Nigerian government to intensify intelligence operations, enhance diplomatic efforts, and investigate all external connections that may be fueling insecurity.
