It seems Google is planning to bring a new Android feature that will automatically detect when you’re on public transit and adjust your device settings accordingly. This will, no doubt, make the journey smoother, especially for the billions of people out there who depend on public transportation daily. This is a fact as they don’t need to enable ‘Do Not Disturb‘ mode to silence incoming calls and alerts, turning down the volume on their device so that the Reels don’t annoy, because Android could soon detect when you’re on public transport and make automatic settings adjustments.
This new feature is very effective as soon as it’s enabled, because Android’s Driving Mode automatically silences incoming calls, texts, and notifications to reduce distractions.
A source shows that the operating system will soon add a new Mode called “Transiting“. It allows the creation of custom sound and notification profiles that activate based on a schedule or calendar event. Preset modes like Driving use special triggers, while standard modes depend on manual or scheduled activation.
A leak has it that the new feature will make “automatic settings adjustments.” It’s not clear yet how it will work, but what is suggested is that the new ‘Transition’ mode will include a unique ‘while transiting’ trigger that sparks when your phone detects you’re taking public transport. When activated, Android optimises the device for a smooth experience on public transport.
Another speculation about the new Transition Mode is that it will enable you to fully personalise which apps, alarms, and contacts can interrupt you while you’re on public transit. Also, you’ll be able to toggle specific display settings or adjust notification behaviour, that is, automatically enabling dark mode or hiding notification icons.
If Google Play Services will be responsible for detecting when you’re on public transit, Google is supposed to allow you to automatically enable its upcoming Motion Cues feature when Transiting Mode kicks in, because Motion Cues is designed to reduce motion sickness in moving vehicles. Probably Google plans to unveil the two features at the same time.
The Transiting Mode is likely to arrive as early as the Android 16 QPR3 release in March. More clues in this regard will unfold as soon as Google initiates the QPR3 beta.
