The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops and air support to the Republic of Benin
The deployment aims to assist in safeguarding Benin’s democratic institutions following a recent attempted military coup.
During Tuesday’s plenary, senators in the Committee of the Whole gave unanimous approval to the President’s request through a voice vote.
The request had been outlined in a letter read to senators by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In the letter, President Tinubu noted that the peace mission is in line with Section 5(4), Part II of the 1999 Constitution and follows consultations with the National Defence Council.
He added that the deployment responds directly to a formal appeal from the government of Benin, seeking assistance to restore stability after the weekend coup attempt.
