Suspected stowaway arrested for hiding in Aircraft compactment


Security personnel at General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport, Ilorin, arrested a suspected stowaway, Segun Martins, on Wednesday after he attempted to hide in the tyre compartment of an Overland aircraft preparing for takeoff

The incident occurred around 3:02 p.m. when Martins gained unauthorized access to the airside and crawled toward the aircraft as it taxied for departure. Reports indicate that the suspect believed the plane was headed to the United States and tried to stow away by concealing himself in the tyre area.

Airport police quickly responded and took Martins into custody. He is currently assisting the Kwara State Police Command with their investigation.

The spokesperson for the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Michael Achimugu, confirmed the incident in a post on his verified X account Wednesday night. He explained that the man attempted to hide between the aircraft’s tyres but was intercepted by ground security personnel and handed over to the Airport Police Command for further inquiry.

The statement read, “At approximately 1502 hours, a male, identified as Segun Martins, gained unauthorized access to the foot of an Overland aircraft that was about to taxi for takeoff and attempted to conceal himself between the aircraft tyres.

Ground security apprehended the individual. He was immediately handed over to the Airport Police for further investigation.”

Achimugu added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
