With all the iPhone launches for 2025 concluded, we can look ahead to what 2026 has in store. New reports suggest Apple will finally add an under-display selfie camera.
The tipster Smart Pikachu shared on Weibo that Apple is testing an under-display camera technology for the iPhone 18 handsets. This means the display notch could shrink in size or disappear completely.
It has been rumoured for years that Apple will include this feature in its iPhones. It may happen in 2026 as the camera technology is already being tested, but of course, nothing is yet.
The leak seems credible as other sources also suggest that the iPhone 18 series will have an under-display Face ID camera. The rumour mill is churning that Apple is slowly working on an all-screen iPhone.
Apple wants to do what Samsung did since 2021
Apple isn’t the first to experiment with under-display cameras, as other phone manufacturers have tried their hand at it. One of them is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, which launched in 2021. It had an under-display camera on the main 7.6-inch screen.
While the camera wasn’t particularly top-notch and Samsung has since ditched the technology, it at least makes it for the company to produce a better one in future. All the 2025 Galaxy smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, come with conventional selfie cameras.
Apple usually tries out innovations after other industry brands have introduced them. But when it does implement new tech, it usually does it in a unique and sometimes better way to set itself apart from others. Touch ID and Face ID are examples of that. We await to see what the company plans to do with the foldable iPhone.
Regarding the launch timeline of Apple’s iPhones, we expect the Pro models to come out in September and the standard iPhone 18 to appear in March 2026.
