Vince Zampella, a renowned figure in the global video game industry and a key force behind the hugely successful Call of Duty franchise, has d!ed following a car crash, according to reports from U.S. media.
Local outlet NBC4 reported that Zampella was k!lled on Sunday while driving his Ferrari along a scenic route north of Los Angeles. Over the course of his career, the studios he led produced some of the highest-selling video games of all time.
Zampella rose to prominence as a co-creator of Call of Duty and later as the founder of Respawn Entertainment, the studio responsible for hit titles such as Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series.
He began his career in the 1990s working as a game designer on shooter titles before co-founding Infinity Ward in 2002. The studio released the first Call of Duty game the following year, a project that would grow into one of the most dominant franchises in gaming history. Infinity Ward was later acquired by Activision.
Following a high-profile split with Activision, Zampella launched Respawn Entertainment in 2010. The studio quickly gained critical and commercial success and was eventually acquired by Electronic Arts in 2017.
At EA, Zampella went on to oversee efforts to revive the Battlefield franchise, further strengthening his status as one of the most influential developers in modern first-person shooter gaming.
