Excessive speed and wrongful overtaking caused the crash involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, FRSC’s Public Education Officer, stated that preliminary investigations by the Ogun Sector Command revealed five adult males were involved in the accident, which occurred around 12pm near the Sinoma area close to Sagamu in Ogun State.
Two of the occupants died on the spot, one was injured, and two others escaped unharmed. Joshua was rescued with minor injuries.
“The injured victim was evacuated for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu,” the FRSC said. “Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus SUV, suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside. The primary causes of the crash—excessive speed and wrongful overtaking—are serious traffic violations and among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”
The Corps conveyed condolences from the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery.
The FRSC also urged motorists to prioritise safety, especially during the festive season, warning against speeding and dangerous overtaking. It reaffirmed its commitment to safer highways through enforcement, rescue operations, and public education.
“The public is reminded that the Corps remains resolute in its mandate to ensure safer roads, prompt emergency response, and sustained public education aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country,” the statement added.
