Twenty-four of the schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, have regained freedom
Security sources confirmed the development to TheCable on Tuesday, though details of the operation are still unclear. An official announcement is expected later tonight.
The rescue follows the November 17 attack, during which bandits stormed the school, killed an official, injured a security guard, and abducted 25 female students.
Two of the girls had earlier escaped while being marched into the bush, according to a BBC report quoting Hussaini Aliyu of Danko Wasagu LGA. The students reportedly slipped away across nearby farmlands.
On November 19, Aliyu released the names of all 25 abducted girls, grouped according to their class levels.
Following the attack, Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, deployed additional police tactical teams to join soldiers and vigilante groups in a coordinated search across suspected hideouts and forest routes.
Army chief Taoreed Lagbaja also ordered troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA to intensify the rescue mission.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to relocate to Kebbi to oversee ongoing security efforts and ensure the safe return of the students.
