PDP members protest against One-party state

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday held a peaceful demonstration at the United States Embassy in Abuja, urging the international community to intervene and help protect Nigeria’s democracy from what they described as an emerging one-party system

The protesters, under the banner of the “PDP Like-Mind Group,” also delivered letters of appeal to the European Union Mission, the Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.

Videos from the protest showed participants holding placards with inscriptions such as “Fix PDP, Fix Nigeria, Save Our Democracy,” “Stop Party Opposition Intimidation,” and “Please Save Our Democracy From Intimidation.”

The group alleged that opposition voices across the country have been increasingly targeted and intimidated by the ruling party, a trend they said threatens Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

The protest comes amid escalating internal turmoil within the PDP. Rival factions of the party’s National Working Committee have traded suspensions in a power struggle that has further deepened divisions.

Over the weekend, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum’s camp announced the suspension of National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and others, prompting a retaliatory move from Anyanwu’s faction, which suspended Damagum and several top officials.

The “Save Our Democracy from Intimidation” protest, according to organizers, was aimed at drawing the attention of the global community to what they described as systematic efforts to weaken opposition parties and stifle political freedom in Nigeria.
