Russia has announced that it is watching closely amid reports of possible United States military action in Nigeria
During a press briefing in Moscow on Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova urged all countries involved to “strictly comply with international legal norms.”
The statement follows reports from US defense officials that the American military has drafted plans for possible air and ground strikes in Nigeria under President Donald Trump’s directive. The move, according to officials, is aimed at protecting Christians allegedly under attack by Islamic militants.
President Trump recently redesignated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” warning that Washington would intervene “guns-a-blazing” if the Nigerian government continued to “ignore the attacks” on Christians.
In response, President Bola Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have dismissed claims of a Christian genocide, stressing that while Nigeria welcomes international support in fighting terrorism, its sovereignty remains non-negotiable.
Zakharova reiterated Russia’s position, saying: “We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Policy Communication, told Russian national television that Nigeria does not require foreign troops. He acknowledged the nation’s ongoing security challenges but insisted that the government has made “massive progress” in addressing them.
