The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy, citing growing security concerns nationwide
In a statement on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Benjamin Hundeyin, said the policy would take effect from January 2, 2026, even as the matter remains before the court.
The Force emphasized that no court order has prevented it from enforcing laws governing tinted vehicle glass.
“It is important to clarify that at no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding the use of tinted glass on vehicles. Nonetheless, in the spirit of responsibility, transparency, and public convenience, the Force suspended enforcement to allow motorists ample opportunity to regularise their documentation and complete the registration process without pressure,” the statement partly read.
Hundeyin explained that recent security assessments indicate a rise in crimes involving vehicles with unauthorised tinted glass, which criminals allegedly use to hide their identities while committing offences such as armed robbery and kidnapping.
“Recent trends reveal a disturbing increase in criminal activities facilitated by vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Some individuals and organised groups exploit this loophole to conceal their identities and carry out crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent offences.
“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has deemed it necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to protect communities. Enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit will therefore resume on 2nd January 2026.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assures the public that the renewed enforcement will be conducted professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights, and in line with existing laws. The Force remains committed to public safety and the rule of law, working alongside all stakeholders to maintain security across Nigeria.”
Motorists are advised to apply for tinted glass permits through approved channels and ensure their vehicles meet legal standards.
